For Metropolis, I wrote about the adaptive reuse transformation of Detroit’s historic, Albert Kahn-designed, Book Depository Building into tech incubator NewLab’s second location, which opened in May 2023. Up-and-coming New York practice Civilian was tasked with the complete interior outfit and took an approach that marries contemporary needs with a reinterpreted Midcentury Modern aesthetic.
